Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

There are two main goals of the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. First, training with advanced gynecologic surgeons with expertise in minimally invasive approaches to treat complex gynecologic conditions. This training will include the practice of comprehensive patient care such as medical management and multidisciplinary approaches. Second, to develop academic leaders by way of education and research in the field of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and disease states for which they will commonly be consulted for such as endometriosis, fibroids, and other pain and bleeding disorders.

Our program curriculum, hospital and department resources fully support these training goals. At Weill Cornell Medicine there are 5 fellowship-trained core faculty members in the field of MIGS. The faculty comes from diverse backgrounds and training from the following FMIGS institutes: University of Rochester, Albert
Einstein College of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, UPMC Magee Womens Hospital, Vanderbilt
University, and North Shore University-Northwell Hospital. The background of our faculty allows for a unique experience as a well-rounded surgical training program in which the fellow will gain expertise in all surgical approaches including robotics, laparoscopy, advanced hysteroscopy, office hysteroscopy, and open and vaginal surgeries.

Our surgical volume is high allowing the fellow to operate on advanced procedures several times a week as the primary surgeon. We have the volume such that fellow education and training will not interfere but enhance that of the residents. At Weill Cornell we have an especially high volume of patients with complex fibroids requiring surgery for large multimyomatous uteri, severe endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, and other challenging conditions in patients with fertility sparing needs. There are two programs, the Weill Cornell Center for Fibroids and Adenomyosis and the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Program, which the fellow will actively participate in during their training. Within these programs the fellow will learn surgical treatment as well as comprehensive multidisciplinary approaches to management.

In addition to rigorous high volume surgical training, the fellow will be supported in their scholarly
activities. They will receive biostatistical instruction and study coordination to fulfill the requirements for
graduation which includes completion of a research endeavor that culminates in a publication or article ready for submission in a peer-reviewed journal as well as a presentation at a national conference. In addition, there will be weekly journal club covering the FMIGS reading list, participation and teaching in weekly simulation exercises. The department will support attendance at all FMIGS conferences and other professional meetings which will benefit their academic growth.
