Dr. Geraldine McGinty, an esteemed academic healthcare leader and radiologist, has been appointed executive vice dean of Weill Cornell Medicine, effective Sept. 8.
In her new role, Dr. McGinty will serve as a vital strategic advisor to Dean Robert A. Harrington, exercise delegated authority on key matters and represent the institution internally and externally on topics central to Weill Cornell’s academic, clinical and professional life.
“In my nearly three years at Weill Cornell, I have benefited from Dr. McGinty’s expertise and guidance every day,” said Dr. Harrington, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine and provost for clinical affairs of Cornell University. “This well-earned role will tap into her many strengths as a tireless faculty advocate, a natural relationship builder and someone who cares deeply about institutional culture. I could not be more pleased to name her as my executive vice dean.”
“I am incredibly excited about our institutional vision to become the academic medical center of the future, and all the work that entails,” Dr. McGinty said. “I look forward to increasing my support of those goals and feel fortunate that Dean Harrington is someone I’ve learned from in every conversation.”
Dr. McGinty’s responsibilities as executive vice dean will broadly span areas of institutional importance: executive leadership for all aspects of faculty affairs; faculty compensation policies and structures; institutional professionalism efforts; ensuring alignment of faculty roles and responsibilities with clinical services; and enabling new collaborations across all of Weill Cornell’s missions. She will also serve as a principal partner in maintaining and enhancing relationships with Cornell’s leadership in Ithaca and with NewYork-Presbyterian.
She will work in close partnership with Dean Harrington and Cathy Garzio, executive vice provost and chief operating officer, to provide strategic guidance on a host of organizational priorities. She will help communicate the strategic vision for Weill Cornell and translate it into action by leading major cross-mission initiatives.
“Geraldine is already a great partner to Bob and me, serving as a strong voice for our faculty and clinicians as we work daily to evolve our operations and institutional culture,” Garzio said. “This chance to expand and amplify her work will pay dividends in charting Weill Cornell’s future.”
Dr. McGinty currently serves as the Banga-Bibliowicz Senior Associate Dean for Faculty, as well as the E. Darracott Vaughan, Jr., M.D. Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. She is a professor of both clinical radiology and clinical population health sciences.
“One of my main priorities is to ensure that Weill Cornell is a place for our academic staff to thrive,” Dr. McGinty said. “We’re an organization that stretches far beyond the Upper East Side, with an obligation to care for and serve all the communities of New York City and beyond. To accomplish this and reflect these communities, we must continuously focus on the faculty enabling our success.”
The Office of Faculty, under her helm, established new career pathways for academics who excel in clinical practice and leadership. Through her leadership, Weill Cornell expanded patient safety programs and established the Office of Professionalism to foster a values-driven, inclusive and high-performing academic community. Her efforts strengthened relationships with regional hospitals and voluntary faculty—key components of Weill Cornell’s commitment to care for residents city-wide.
“As my role has gone from being a clinical faculty member to becoming a senior institutional leader, the constant has been that I get to help smart, kind people who are doing important things,” Dr. McGinty said. “And that excites me the most, day after day.”
About Dr. McGinty
Dr. McGinty received her medical degree in 1988 from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and a master’s in business administration in 2000 from Columbia University. She completed her radiology residency in 1993 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in women’s imaging at the Massachusetts General Hospital a year later. She joined Weill Cornell Medicine’s faculty in 2014 and was appointed chief strategy and contracting officer of Weill Cornell Medicine’s Physician Organization in 2017. She was the founding academic director for Cornell’s Executive M.B.A./M.S. in Healthcare Leadership.
In 2018, Dr. McGinty was elected chair of the American College of Radiology’s board—the first woman to hold the role. A champion of mentorship and sponsorship, she founded the RADEqual Initiative in 2016 to cultivate mentorship and networking opportunities in radiology and imaging informatics. In 2019, Weill Cornell Medicine awarded her the Jessica M. and Natan Bibliowicz Award for Excellence in Mentoring Women Faculty, and in 2024 she received the American College of Radiology Gold Medal. In 2026, Dr. McGinty was awarded honorary membership in the European Society of Radiology.
