There are two main goals of the Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medicine:
- Training with advanced gynecologic surgeons who have expertise in minimally invasive approaches to treat complex gynecologic conditions. This training will include the practice of comprehensive patient care, such as medical management and multidisciplinary approaches.
- To develop academic leaders by way of education and research in the field of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and disease states for which they will commonly be consulted for, such as endometriosis, fibroids, and other pain and bleeding disorders.
Our program curriculum, along with hospital and departmental resources, is designed to fully support these training goals. At Weill Cornell Medicine, our field of CBG is supported by five fellowship-trained core faculty members. They bring diverse educational and clinical backgrounds, having trained at prestigious institutions including the University of Rochester, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, Vanderbilt University, and North Shore University-Northwell Hospital. This rich faculty expertise provides a unique and well-rounded surgical training experience. Fellows in our program gain comprehensive skills across all surgical approaches, including robotics, laparoscopy, advanced and office hysteroscopy, as well as open and vaginal surgeries.
Our surgical volume is high, allowing Fellows to serve as the primary surgeon on advanced procedures multiple times per week. This volume is structured so that fellow training enhances the education of residents. At Weill Cornell, we care for a particularly complex patient population, including those with large multimyomatous uteri, severe endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, and other challenging conditions with fertility-sparing needs. Fellows actively participate in two specialized programs during their training: the Weill Cornell Center for Fibroids and Adenomyosis and the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Program. Through these programs, Fellows gain expertise not only in surgical treatment but also in comprehensive, multidisciplinary approaches to patient management.
In addition to rigorous, high-volume surgical training, our Fellows receive robust support for their scholarly activities. They are provided with biostatistical instruction and study coordination to meet graduation requirements, which include completing a research project that culminates in a publication or article suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal and a presentation at a national conference. Fellows also participate in a weekly journal club, as well as participation and teaching in weekly simulation exercises. The department supports attendance at conferences and other professional meetings to foster academic growth and career development.
